Abstract

628,051. Electrically-propelled vehicles. HINDMARCH, T., and MENSFORTH, T. April 29, 1947, No. 11478. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii)] In a road or rail electric vehicle deriving its current from an outside source there are provided one or more pressure fluid operated clutches having a manually controlled slip for acceleration or deceleration of the vehicle. The clutch may directly couple the motor and the rail or road wheel or wheels. The clutch or a number of them may be incorporated in a change speed gear box between the rail or road wheel or wheels. Upon accelerating the vehicle and the slip of the clutch becoming zero the field excitation of the motor may be reduced for further acceleration. With at least two motors they may be connected at will in series or parallel with the supply. The motor or motors may be separately excited. As shown in Fig. 1 the motors a, a<SP>2</SP> supplied from outside source d each drive an axle b<SP>1</SP>, b<SP>2</SP> through clutches f and reduction gearing. In Fig. 2 the motor shaft e carries the driving portion i of the clutch f driving a driven portion m carried on a splined sleeve h, which is rotatably carried on the shaft e. Keyed to the sleeve h is a pinion i meshing with a gear k carried on the driven shaft b<SP>1</SP>. Guards o, n are rotatably mounted on the shaft b<SP>1</SP>. To accelerate the vehicle the motors may be run up using resistors on light load, and then the clutch may be let in at approximately 1/10th of full speed or at 1/5th full speed where a series of clutches is employed. The field excitation may be reduced to obtain approximately half speed, and the motors may be connected in parallel to the supply with consequential adjustment of field excitation to avoid jolting, and then the field excitation reduced until full speed is obtained. On deceleration the excitation is increased causing the motors to act as generators until approximately half speed, the procedure for acceleration is then reversed and the vehicle finally brought to rest by mechanical brakes. Specification 599,887, [Group XXIV], is referred to.
