Abstract

888,940. Electrically-driven vehicles. GERLACH, K., and DURAND, F. June 17, 1959 [June 25, 1958], No. 20842/59. Classes 79(2) and 79(3). In a two-axle vehicle drive an electric motor 6 has a hollow shaft 8 driving the planet carrier 9 of a differential gear, the sun wheels 11, 12 of which are connected by shafts 14, 17, respectively to the two axles 1, 2. Each axle is driven through a reversible worm gear 16 having its housing connected by a torque arm 21 to the casing for the motor and differential gear. To prevent skidding during starting or braking, the differential may be locked by a claw clutch 28. The end of each worm 31 remote from the motor may be connected to its driving shaft 32 by a coupling 33 as shown in Fig. 7. Alternatively, the shaft may have a splined connection with the worm and be connected to it half way along its length. The motor and gearing may be arranged outside the wheels 3 on one side of the vehicle while auxiliary machinery, such as an air compressor and its reservoir, and a disc brake are similarly arranged on the other side to permit a continuous floor of low height to be provided.
