Abstract
A dual purpose electrical machine (1) has its brushes connected to a battery (2) by a manual or automatic switch (3). The machine excitation is controlled by a rheostat (4), actioned by either brake or accelerator control to strengthen or weaken the field. A clutch (5) is provided to disconnect the engine (6) from the electrical machine. A gear box (7) is provided between the electrical machine and the wheels (8) with a transmission shaft (9) and differential (10) connected in a conventional manner. The system is especially for vehicles which are continually stopping or slowing down, such as public transport vehicles.
