Abstract

440,160. Motor-vehicle driving-gear. VOITH, W., VOITH, H., and VOITH, H., (trading as VOITH, J. M., [Firm of]), Heidenheim-on - the - Brenz, Wurtemberg, Germany. June 17, 1935, No. 17403. Convention date, June 15, 1934. [Class 79 (ii)] Hydraulic means are provided for driving independently each side of a motor vehicle, more especially a multi-wheel or endless-track vehicle. Fig. 1 shows two power units A<1>, A<2> each driving a wheel E<1>, E<2> respectively through hydrodynamic turbo-gears B<1>, B2. A clutch F is provided for locking the two wheels E<1>, E<2> together for straight forward or backward motion, and separate brakes d3, d4 are provided for each wheel. A single steering wheel control G, Fig. 3, is provided for all these elements, and comprises a cam H which on rotation in either direction frees the clutch F. Further rotation in either direction effects gradual emptying of the associated turbo-gears for forward travel by means of a cam J, thus slowing down one drive and causing the vehicle to turn in that direction. Still further turning of the wheel G puts on the brake d3 or d<4> by means of a cam K, and final rotation releases this brake and causes a cam L to reverse the direction of rotation of the drive on the inside of the travel curve. An additional cam L<1> may be fixed to the cam L and be mounted to move axially to bring either cam into position to control the turbo-gear. The cam L<1> is of the same size and shape as the cam J, and may be the cam J itself, and effects reverse movement of both drives. The regulating devices of the motors A', A<2> may be so connected with the regulating devices of the associated turbogears B<1> and B<2> that when the gear is brought to a standstill the corresponding motor also ceases to run, and the motors A<1>, A<2> may be replaced by a single power unit operating both turbo-gears B<1> and B<2>.
