Abstract

419,905. Reducing torsional oscillation in shafts. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON., Winterthur, Switzerland. Dec. 28, 1933, No. 36458. Convention date, Feb. 28. [Class 80 (ii).] In power transmission mechanism which includes two or more shafts or shaft portions whose critical speeds differ, the drive is arranged to be transmitted through any one of the shafts without changing the direction or speed of rotation of the driven member relatively to the driving member when it is required to alter the natural periodicity of the transmission system. When the shaft is in two or more portions the drive can be transmitted through one shaft portion or through two or more portions in series. In an engine 4 having two cylinders, the crankshaft is coupled at 7 to a section which in turn is coupled at 8 to a section 10 and this section at its outer end is coupled at 9 to a shaft 13 which is connectable at 12 with the transmitting section which carries a spur wheel 5 engaging a driven spur wheel 6. The shaft lengths l<1>, l<2> and l<3> are utilized by making or breaking the necessary coupling connection according to the natural periodicity of the system required. The Specification describes also arrangements for a 4 cylinder engine. The coupling or couplings may be controlled manually or automatically in accordance with the transmission speed or in accordance with the torsional vibration produced in the shaft through which power is being transmitted. The controlled element may become operative through electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic or mechanical linkages and may include a servomotor.
