Abstract

596,933. Differential gearing. ELLIS, E. D. Aug. 4, 1945, No. 20118. [Class 80(ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] In an endless-track vehicle driving and steering mechanism the tracks are normally driven through a single cross-shaft, a normal differential and half shafts, and steering is effected by means of a direct drive from one end of the cross-shaft to one of the half shafts so that the engine drives the half shafts at different speeds; a clutch is provided at each end of the cross shaft for this purpose. The Figure shows a driving shaft 1 with a bevel wheel 2 in engagement with another bevel wheel 3, the latter being keyed to a cross shaft 4. A pinion 6 also keyed to the shaft 4 drives a differential cage 11 through a toothed ring 7. The differential drives half shafts 9 which are in turn connected to the track sprockets 12 through gear wheels 13, 14. The cross shaft 4 has, attached at each of its ends one element 15 of a friction clutch, the other half 16 of which is integral with a gearwheel 17 and is free to turn on the shaft 4. Steering is effected by these clutches engagement of one of which causes the gear 17 to drive a meshing gear 20 keyed to one half shaft 9. This direct drive causes the appropriate half shaft to speed up or slow down relative to the differential speed, depending upon the difference of gear ratios between the wheels 17, 20 and the wheels 6, 7 a factor which determines the turning speed of the vehicle.
