Abstract

149,486. Martin, W. E. June 11, 1919. Winding and paying-out apparatus on motor vehicles.-A motor tractor is fitted with a power pulley and winding-drum driven from the engine. The pulley is mounted at one end of a transverse shaft, which can be driven from the motor at various speeds and has a pinion at its other end driving a differential shaft. The differential shaft is fitted with pinions which drive the rear wheels, one of the pinions being slidable to engage a spur gear on a winding-drum mounted on the rear axle. The power pulley d, Fig. 2, is mounted at one end of a shaft b<2> driven from the propeller shaft b<1>, and at the other is a sliding pinion b<3> driving differential gear c<1>. The rear wheels e are driven by pinions c<3>, c<4> on the differential shaft, one of the pinions c<3> being slidable into engagement with a winding drum f<1> on the rear axle. The change-speed gear comprises a bevel gear b<5>, Fig. 4, driven from the propeller shaft and mounted on the shaft b<2>. The bevel gear b<5> is integral with a gear b' constantly in mesh with a gear h<1> on a countershaft. A gear b<9> is splined to the shaft b<2> and may be clutched with the bevel-gear b<5> to effect a solid drive, or engaged with a gear h<2> on the countershaft for the second speed. A second gear b<10> is splined to the shaft b<2> and may engage a gear h<3> for the third speed, or a gear i for reverse. The gears b<9>, b<10> are controlled by a single operating-lever.
