Abstract

181,682. Ribetti, E. June 16, 1921, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Variable-speed friction gearing suitable for motor vehicles comprises a disc 2 driving separately two rollers 4, 5 which are movable in unison to vary speed and are adapted to allow differential movement automatically so as to dispense with balance gearing. The roller shafts 6, 7, which are geared to drive the road wheels, are supported at their inner ends in block 10, which is normally pressed by a spring 11 towards the disc 2. The rollers 4, 5 are connected through bell-crank levers 12 and links 13 to a beam 14, which is moved parallel to itself to vary the speed from a hand-lever 15. The automatic action is accompanied by a tilting of the beam 14. The spring 11 is compressed to disconnect the driver by a pedal 17. When the rollers 4, 5 are moved inwards past low-speed position, they come opposite a recess 18 in the disc 2. Pressure on the pedal 17 then brings them into engagement with a disc 3 on the engine shaft 1, so that each is driven reversely to its previous motion, and the vehicle travels backwards.
