Driving steering-wheels.-In motor-vehicles, the front and rear axles are driven from a main differential which is driven by belt or chain gearing from the driven shaft of the variable-speed gear, the main differential and the speed gear being carried in a single casing. The motor-driven shaft 10 drives an alined shaft 11 through a four-speed or other speed gear of known type, which may be controlled by movement of clutches 32. The shaft 11 drives by belt or chain gearing 45, the master-wheel 43 of a differential gear driving shafts 35, 36, which drive the front and rear axle differentials through cardan shafts 51. The speed gear and belt or chain gearing are carried in separate compartments of a casing 1 secured on the frame of the vehicle, one compartment containing grease and the other oil. The shafts 35, 36 are supported in bearings 92, 97 in removable cups 95, and carry brake drums 53 engaged by brake bands 54. The main differential may be cut out by connecting the master-wheel 43 directly to the shafts 35, 36 by clutches 62 operated by levers 68, the upper ends of which are connected by a link 69, adjustable in length in order to retain the clutches both in or both out of action. The shafts 35, 36 are provided with a thrust abutment within the differential, and their outward movement is limited by collars 91.
