Variable-speed and reversing gearing; securing wheels on shafts.-Variable-speed gearing is arranged so that the position for reversed driving is passed through in changing from one forward speed to another. Driving and driven shafts 13, 17 are in line, a gear 14 secured to the former constantly driving a countershaft 24 through a gear 30. The shaft 17 is formed for a considerable portion of its length with gear teeth 19, upon which a gear 20 slides as on feathers. Similar gear teeth 26, 27 are formed on the shaft 24. An idler 28 is driven by the teeth 27. The highest speed is obtained by sliding a gear 34 upon the teeth 26 into mesh with the teeth 19. The second speed is a direct drive produced when the gear 20 is slid into clutch engagement with the gear 14. The third or low speed is obtained by sliding the gear 20 into mesh with the teeth 26. Between its end positions, the gear 20 must mesh with the gear 28, which yields a reversed drive. This reversed drive can be produced directly from any of the forward speeds. A gear 31 may be provided for driving a pulley as described in Specification 159,005, [Class 79 (ii), Motor vehicles, Driving &c.]. The invention is applicable upon motor-vehicles.
