Abstract
483,343. Variable - speed gearing. MASON & SONS, Ltd., E. N., and SOWARD, F. A. Nov. 14, 1936, No. 31160. [Class 80 (ii)] Gearing by which a shaft 25 may be driven at speeds varying continuously from zero in both directions comprises bevel planet pinions 31 supported on a cross-shaft 32 which passes through or is integral with the shaft 25. The pinions 31 mesh with wheels 28, .29 carried by sleeves 26, 27 loose on the shaft 25. The sleeve 27 is driven through an open belt 40 from an intermediate shaft 5 driven in turn from a driving-shaft 2 through variable-speed gearing V, W. This gearing V, W is shown as twincone expanding pulley gearing, but might be of another type, such as expanding chain-gearing or disc-and-roller gearing. The sleeve 26 is driven directly from the shaft 2 through an open belt 35 and through a toothed pair 36, 37 so that the wheel 28 is driven at constant speed and in the opposite direction with respect to the variably-driven wheel 29. Control is effected by sliding axially a cross-shaft 17 by turning a nut 24 upon its end by a hand wheel or by a sprocket (not shown) for remote control. The gearing is suitable for use in mechanical photocopying machines.
