Abstract

323,093. West, C. A. Nov. 23, 1928. Variable-speed gearing.-A two-speed bevel gear comprises crown-wheels 8, 18 driven alternatively by pinions 7, 17 adapted to be connected to a driving-shaft 1 by a sliding splined sleeve 4 with internal clutch teeth 20. The pinions 7, 17 are fast respectively upon solid and hollow shafts 2. 3 which, according to this invention, are independently supported at their ends in taper roller bearings so as not to touch one another. These bearings are shown at 5, 6, 15, 16. The bearings 15, 16 of the outer shaft may be supported in a tube 26 longitudinally adjustable. The gearing may be used upon a vehicle in series with the usual change gearing.
