Abstract

Variable-speed friction gearing comprises two or more similar sets of discs such as a<1>, a<2>, a<3>, b<1>, b<2>, b<3> different pairs of which can be mutually engaged, combined with belt gearing. Pairs in the different gear sets are arranged either so as to drive a shaft b simultaneously, or so as to drive independently. The form shown has two such sets, the gears a<1> &c. being secured to the shaft a of a motor f, and the gears b &c. in groups secured to their shaft b so that corresponding pairs of discs may be entrained by sliding the shaft b in its bearing d<2>. The bearings d<2> are supported by arms d<1>, Fig. 1, pivoting about a fixed rod d so that the shaft b may be moved away from the shaft a to disconnect. Continued transverse movement of the shaft b brings the largest discs b<2> upon it into braking engagement with fixed blocks g. Proportional frictional engagement between the entrained pairs is maintained by the tensions in belts c transmitting power to say the road wheels of a vehicle. The sets b<1> &c. may be independently revoluble, or both loose, on the shaft b, so as to dispense with a differential.
