Abstract
232,515. Stratford, H. C. Nov. 24, 1924. Differential gearing; clutches, ratchet. - Comprises ratchet differential gearing in which toothed wheels 3 on the driven shafts 2 are engaged by pairs of opposed pawls 19, 20 pressed towards the toothed wheels by springs 23 between the pawls, the action being such that the driving member 11 acts positively on a lug 21 of one pawl 20 (say) of each pair to disengage it from its toothed wheel and then through the spring 23 causes the other pawl 19 to engage the wheel and drive it. The pawls are pivoted in pairs on pins 18 carried by cheeks 7 secured together by bolts 10 and forming with the driving member 11 a casing for the gearing. Lugs 21 on the pawls are pressed apart by the springs 23 and project into slots 12 in the driving member 11, thus allowing a slight rotary motion between the driving member and the pawl-carrier. The gearing provides positive driving in both directions and allows either road wheel to over-run the other.
