Locking by frictional detents. - An automatic brake for preventing reverse movement of a vehicle comprises a toothed wheel f mounted on the axle or cardan shaft a and adapted to be coupled thereto by a ratchet and pawl device which is inoperative on forward movement of the vehicle. The toothed wheel is adapted to operate a brake band p, which co-operates with a drum fixed on the axle, through a pinion g, toothed wheels h, t fixed on a shaft j, and a chain r attached at one end to the toothed wheel t and at the other end to the free end of the band p. The toothed wheel f may have ratchet teeth formed on its interior surface to co-operate with pawls mounted on two discs d fixed to the axle a, or the pawls may be mounted on the wheel f and a ratchet wheel fixed to the axle. To prevent operation of the device, the pinion g may be slid on the fixed shaft k out of engagement with the wheels f, h against spring pressure normally holding it against a roller n on the shaft k, the pinion being moved by means of a lever ergaging a groove g<1> therein. The fixed end of the brake band is attached by a screw q to the shaft k.
