Brakes and retarding-apparatus for winding and paying-out apparatus; self-sustaining gear. - In winches, cranes, capstans, hoists, &c. driven through epicyclic gearing, unwinding of the hauling cable under the influence of the load is prevented or controlled by pawl and ratchet devices or brake gear associated with springs, dash-pots, or other cushioning devices adapted to absorb shock prior to the ratchet and pawl device or brake coming into positive holding action. The ratchet wheel b, Fig. 1, keyed to the shaft a of the barrel is engaged by pawls c mounted on a ring d, the movement of which is limited by stops e, f. The stop e is fixed to the ring d and the stop f to the flange g of the barrel. Both stops are faced with rubber, leather, &c., and are pressed apart by helical springs h. In a modification, the ratchet teeth are undercut and provided with leaf springs m, Fig. 2, on to which the pawls c fall. The pawls are pivotally mounted in blocks p working in slots on the barrel flange g and acted on by springs h which may be contained in telescopic tubes s provided with an air vent. The pawls may be forced into perliminary engagement by springs t. The abutting parts may be faced with leather, rubber, &c. In another modification, the ratchet wheel comprises an inner member b', Fig. 4, keyed to the shaft a and an outer member b<2>. Lugs x on the member b<1> project between lugs y on the member b<2>, pads z of felt &c. being placed between them. The pawls c are pivoted in the flange g of the winch barrel, and are held out of action when the winch is raising a load by links 2 connected to blocks 3 sliding in grooves 4 in the member b'.
