Abstract

220,070. Streader, R., and Horsman, T. O. May 10, 1923. Driving arrangements for paddlewheels.-In a power unit and transmission mechanism for driving and steering paddle steamers the engine shaft 2, Figs. 1 and 2, drives a parallel counter-shaft 22 through forward and reversing spur and chain gearing 3, 21, the paddle wheels 6 being driven through gearing and steering clutches 7 provided on the ends of the countershaft. The clutches 7 are operated by a steering wheel 13 acting through a cam 26 and rods 25. so that rotation of the steering wheel in either direction releases the corresponding clutch and the vessel turns to one side. Continued movement of the steering-wheel applies a brake on the declutched side, through an arm 26<c>, links 27<a> 27, a stop 29, and a cam 28, Fig. 6. If the brakes are already applied to both wheels by means of a pedal 15 and connections 30, rotation of the steering-wheel releases the brake on one side by means of the link 27 and the use of the flat part of a cam 31, so that the vessel is steered. The reversing clutches 4 are operated by a pedal 16, and another pedal 14 operates the clutches 10, 11 of an epicyclic two-speed friction gear shown in Fig. 3 The chain and spur wheel 9, driven from the engine, may be directly connected to the shaft 22 by a clutch 11, or may drive the shaft indirectly through planetary friction rollers 24 rotatably carried by a boss 20 slidably-keyed on the shaft. When the clutch member 10 is moved along the shaft it engages the rollers 24 and bring them into contact with a cone on the gear wheel 9 ; at the same time teeth 19 or the clutch engage a stop and hold the clutch stationery, so that the member 20 and the shaft 22 are driven at a reduced speed. The lower part 37 of the steering shaft carries two other cams for acting upon the steering clutches in addition to the cam 26; with one of these both clutches may be held out of engagement, while the engine drives other machinery by means of a pulley 36; with the other cam both clutches may be disengaged or one at a time may be engaged. The steering shaft 13 fits removably into the top part of the shaft 37 or into a parallel stub shaft geared thereto, for use when driving continuously in the reverse direction. The hand-wheel and shaft 13 mav be replaced by a lever fitting over the shaft 37.
