Lrcnrnnmine, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State ofllisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Control Mechanism for Concrete-Mixers, of which the following is a specification. n
This invention appertains to portable mixing machines and comprises essentially certain novel control mechanism whereby the power of a suitable motor mounted on the machine may be readily utilized for causing forward and rearward travel of the machine on its wheels, for raising and loweringa charging bucket or equivalent device by which the mixing drum is supplied with the materials to be mixed, and for driving the said drum.
For a full understanding` of the present invention, reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a concrete mixer of the portable or wheeled type, showing the invention as used in connection therewith.k Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the frame of the machine broken away and illustrating more in detail the various parts of the control mechanism. Fig. 8 is a fragmentary front view showing more clearly the arrangement of the driving and controlling gears. Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view in section bringing out more clearly the connection intermediate the winding drum and its associated driving gear or element.
Throughout the following detail description and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
The machine illustrated may be said to be of a conventional type, so far as the purposes of the invention are concerned, a controlling mechanism as hereinafter detailed being susceptible of use in connection with various kinds of mixers involving the general' features of a portable truck,miXing drum and charging bucket.
ln the drawings A denotes the truck which is supported on the front `and rear wheels 1 and 2 respectively, suitable steering mechanism, not shown, being supplied for the first mentioned wheels. ,n n

The range of movement of the bucket D is indicated by the full and dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the operating means for the bucket includes primarily suitable cables 3 connected at one end with the bucket D and passing over sheaves 4: on the framework 5 of the machine. The ycables 3 extend to drums 6 on the shaft 7 and are adapted to wind'about said drums. An operating cable 8 connects the shaft 7 with the motor B, under the control of the `mechanism now to be set forth, andy said cable passes about a large drum 9 on the shaft 7 and around the small drum 10 loosely mounted upon a shaft 1 supported in suitable bearings on the truck A.
The engine shaft 12 carries a gear 13 which meshes with a corresponding gear 14 on the shaft 11, power being thus transmitted from the engine to the shaft 11.
As previously suggested, the drum 1() is loosely mounted on the shaft 11, being directly carried by a clutch sleeve which passes through the drum and is journaled on said shaft. Gears 15 and 16 are keyed or otherwise secured to the clutch sleeve 17 aforesaid and are located on opposite sides of the drum 10 which is loose on said sleeve. The clutch sleeve 17 carries the usual clutch housing 18 about which a brake band 19 passes, and clutch dogs 20 of a conventional type,roperable by a lever 21, cooperate with the part 18.
On a countershaft 22 located adjacent to the shaft 11 is mounted a gear 23 shiftable by a lever 24E into mesh with the gear 15. The gear 23 is also adapted to mesh with a small reversing gear 25 j ournaled above the shaft 22 kand normally in mesh with the gear 16. At its rear end the shaft 22 carries a bevel pinion 26 that meshes with a bevel gear 27 on a transverse shaft 28 mounted on the frame of the truck A iny any suitable manner. The shaft 28 carries sprocket wheels 29 that are connected by lthe sprocket `drive chains 30 with large sprockets 31 secured to the rear wheels 2 of the truck A.y A feather and spline connection32 is preferably pro'- vided intermediate the shaft 22 and the gear 23. f f
On the gea-r- 15v is mounted a transversely slidable p'inp movable by the operation yof a lever' 34:' into. and ut of engagement with an opening in the drum 10. Itis by this means thatthe drum 10 may be connected aind disconnected from the engine B in a manner which will now be more fully described.
In the normal operation of the machine for mixing purposes, it being understood that the shaft 11 is supplied with' driving gears 35 engaging gear rings 36 on the drum C, it will be apparent that the drum C is readily rotatable bythe engine. When it is desired to raise the bucketl) for the purpose of charging the :drum C thev operator by manipulating the lever, 34 will engage the pin 33 with the drum 10, whereupon a driving connection between the shaft 11 and the drum may be established by the mere operation `of the clutch lever 21. When the bucket D lhas been raised into the dotted line position inFig. 1, the lever 21 will, of course, be moved to the left, as shown in Fig. 2, and .the brake band19 applied so asl to ydiscontinue the upward movement ofthe bucket-D. The bucket may then be gradually loweredvby. controlling the reverse rotation of the drum 10 by means of the lever y 37 whichis connected withthe brake band 19.
When it is desired to adjust the gearing I above described, for traction purposes, it is only necessary to shift the lever 24 in one direction in ordery to engage the gear 23 with they gear 15, whereupon the operation of the clutch lever 2l will cause the-shaft 22 to be driven and frointhis shaft power is transmitted to the driving wheels 2 through the pinion 26, gear 27, shaft 28 and sprocket chain connections 30. In the above mannelthe machinev may be caused to travel forwardly. lf itis desired. to cause a reverse or reaward movement of the machine'the lever 24 is shifted so as to carryl the gear 23 into `mesh with the reversegear 25, where` upon on operation of the lever 21 yto properly actuate the clutch mechanism, power is transmitted from `theshaft 11 to the shaft 22 in a reverse direction to that before de` scribed, through the gears 16 vand 25.
lt will of course be understood thatV whenv the gearingv is being operated for .traction purposes theflever 34 will have been 4preT viously operatedso as .to disconnect the gear 15 from the drum 10. Infact, the parts 10 and 15 are` only connected when the bucket D is to, be operated. y y
The mechanismabove described is very simpleand com actly'arranged and affords an extremely. effective.and` desirable control y formachines .of the class described.
The means hereinbefore", referred to 'for connecting the gearl with the drum 1 0, and including the parts -33 and 34, lmay be seen clearly in Fig. `4,0f the drawings. As shown in this figure the lever 34 is adapted for ro-y tarymovement to thereby engage with a cam lcarried byV the gearl. f- By such. en gagementthe lever 341s caused to move out:`
`ward withrespectto the gear 15, and thereby pull outwardly upon the pin 33 which is normally pressed inward by a. coiled spring 33a bearing thereagainst. 1When the member 34 has been adjusted to the dotted line position in Fig. 4 it will be obvious that the pin 33 is entirely disengaged from the drum 10 and the driving connection intermediate the parts 15 and 10 thus interrupted-On the other hand, by moving the lever 34 from its dotted line `position vto its full line position rthe spring 33a is permitted to act on the vpin 33 to engage the same with the vdrum 10.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a driven shaft, aclutch sleeve on said shaft, means for clutching said sleeve ed on said clutch sleeve, a plurality of gears connected with the clutch sleeve for rotation therewith, a hoisting cable adapted to wind about said drum, a shiftable gear, means for shifting said shiftable gear'into operative connection with the first men-l tioned gears, and means for connecting one of the irstmentioned gears with the wind-` ing drum whereby to transmit motion from the said driven shaft to the winding drum. 2. 5. Control mechanism for mixing machines comprising, in combination, a motor driven shaft, clutch mechanism including a clutch member having a clutch sleeve mounted on said shaft, means for clutching said clutch member to the shaft for rotation therewith, a winding drum loose on the said clutch sleeve, gears fixed to said sleeve, means for interlocking one of said gears with the winding drum at will whereby the drum will rotate with the clutch sleeve, a drive shaft, means intermediate'said gears and the drive shaft for transmitting forward and reverse motion to the latter, and a brake band cooperating with the clutch member to retard the movement of the drum in one direction after release of the clutch member from the driven shaft.

In control mechanism of the class described, the combination of a driven shaft, a clutch member mounted on said shaft, means for clutching said member to the shaft, gears connected with the clutch member, a drum supported on the shaft, manually operable means for connecting said drum with one of the gears aforesaid, a drive gear, a reversing gear engaging one of the first mentioned gears, and means for shifting said drive gear into engagement with the other of the first mentioned gears, or the reverse gear.
7. In control mechanism of the class described, the combination of a driven shaft, a clutch member mounted on said shaft, means for clutching said member to the shaft, gears connected with the clutch member, a drum supported on the shaft, manually operable means for connecting said drum with one of the gears aforesaid, a drive shaft and drive gear, a reversing gear engaging one of the first mentioned gears, and means for shifting said drive gear into engagement with the otherof the first mentioned gears, or the reverse gear, whereby forward and reverse motion may be imparted to the drive shaft aforesaid, the clutch member above mentioned comprising a sleeve supporting the first mentioned gears and carrying between said'gears the winding drum above referred to.
8. In control mechanism of the class described, the combination of a driven shaft,
a clutch member mounted on said shaft, means for clutching said member to the shaft, gears connected with the clutch member, a drum supported on the shaft, means for connecting said drum with one of the gears aforesaid, a drive shaft and drive gear, a reversing gear engaging one of the first mentioned gears, and means for shifting said drive gear into engagement with the other of the first mentioned gears, or the reverse gear, whereby forward and reverse motion may be imparted to the drive shaft aforesaid, the clutch member above mentioned comprising a sleeve supporting the first mentioned gears and carrying between said gears the winding drum above referred to.

Control mechanism for mixing machines comprising, in combination, a motor driven shaft, clutch mechanism including a clutch member, mounted on said shaft, means for clutching said clutch member to the shaft for rotation therewith, a winding drum loose on said motor driven shaft, a gear fixed to said clutch member, means for interlocking said gear with the winding drum, a drive shaft, a shiftable gear connected with said shaft, and means for moving said shiftable gear to engage the same With the first mentioned gear to transmit motion to the drive shaft.
10. Control mechanism for mixing machines comprising, in combination, a motor driven shaft, clutch mechanism including a clutch member, mounted on said shaft, means for clutching said clutch member to the shaft for rotation therewith, a winding drum loose on said motor driven shaft, a gear fixed to said clutch member, means for interlocking said gear with the winding drum, a drive shaft, a gear connected with said shaft, and means for engaging said gear with the first mentioned gear to transmit motion to the drive shaft.
11. Control mechanism for mixing machines comp-rising, in combination, a motor driven shaft, clutch mechanism, including a clutch member having a clutch sleeve, mounted on said shaft, means for clutching said clutch member to the shaft for rotation therewith, a winding drum loose on the said clutch sleeve, a gear fixed to said sleeve, means for connecting Asaid gear with the winding drum, a drive shaft, and means for communicating motion to said drive shaft by engagement with the gear on said clutch sleeve.
