DRIVING-GEAR IVIECHANISM.
Original application led July 15, 1910, Serial No. 572,157.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 19, 1912. Divided and this application filed November 28, 1910. Serial No. 594,496.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. SAILER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Janesville, Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Driving- Gear Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in driving gear mechanisms.
My improved driving gear mechanism is especially designed by me for use in my improved traction engine, for which l tiled application for Letters Patent July 15, 1910, Ser. No. 572,157, and this application is a division thereof. My improved driving gear mechanism is, however, adapted for use in other relations.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved driving' mechanism or transmission gearing that is strong, simple and durable, whereby a number of speeds may be secured.
A further object is to provide an improved driving mechanism or transmission gearing by which the traction wheels may be driven independently, either in the same o-r in reverse directions, or whereby power may be delivered to one and not to the other.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure, which is a preferred embodiment of my invention, is clearly illustratedV in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure l is a detail plan of a structure embodying the features of my invention, the engine proper being omitted and only the crank shaft being shown, and a portion of the frame being broken away. Most of the control levers are also omitted. Fig. Il is an enlarged detail longitudinal section taken on a line corresponding to line 2 2 of F ig. l. Fig. lll is a detail vertical section taken on aline corresponding to line 3 3 of ing. n.
In the drawings, similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, the frame 1 is shown largely in conventional form, as its structural details form no part of the present invention. It will be understood that in practice, the frame will be made of pieces suitably connected. The engine proper or motor, as stated, is not here illustrated.
The traction wheels 2 are also shown in conventional form. They are preferably of the construction shown in my before mentioned application. The axle for the traction wheels 2 is formed of sections 3 and 4, each section being provided with bearings 5 and 6. On the driving or motor shaft- 7 is a pair of pinions 8 and 9, which may be secured to the shaft by the clutches 10. These clutches 10 are preferably of the construction shown in my application for Let ters Patent filed kMay 10, 1910, Ser. No. 560,404. The levers for actuating these clutches are no-t here illustrated.
On the axle section 3 are gears 11, 12, and 13, all of the same size. The gear 13 is fixed to the axle to revolve therewith by means of the key 14, while the gears 11 and 12 are revolubly mounted on the axle and arranged in mesh with the pinions 8 and 9, respectively, on the driving shaft. Pinions 15 and 16 are fixed to the gears 11 and 12, respectively.
Arranged parallel with the axle is a transmission shaft 17 Fixed to this shaft to revo-lve therewith is a gear 18 meshing with the pinion 15. Revolubly mounted on this transmission shaft 17 is a gear 19, meshing with the pinion 16. Fixed to this gear to revolve therewith is a pinion 2O meshing with the gear 13 on the axle section 3. A clutch 21 is provided for securing the gear 11 to the axle section 3. When this clutch is in engagement, the axle section 3 is driven in a reverse direction. The shifting means fo-r this clutch 21 are not here illustrated.
On the axle section -t is a gear 22, arranged in mesh wit-h a pinion on the transmission shaft 17. The gears and ldriven independently or pinions are of such dimensions that both axle sections are driven at the same speed, the section 3 being driven for one speed through the train of gears 9, 12, 16, 19, 2O and 13, while the other is driven through the train of gears 8, l1, 15, 18, 23 and 22. iVith this connection, the axle sections may be simultaneously through manipulation of the clutches 10. This is of advantage in steering the engine.
The section 3 can be driven in a reverse direction by means of the clutch 21, as described, while the section 4 is driven in a reverse direction through the auxiliary transmission shaft 24, which is connected to the main transmission shaft through the pinions 25 thereon and the pinion 26 on the auxiliary transmission shaft, and through t-hev pinion 27 to the gear 22.
The pinions 23 and 27 are secured to their respective shafts by clutches which are adapted to be manipulated to disconnect both, or connect either of said pinions, a double yoke 28 being provided to engage the shaft members of the clutch, the yoke being operated through the post 29, which is extended into convenient reach of the operator.
To provide another speed, I mount on the transmission shaft a gear 30 having a clutch connection therewith. rIhe means for en gaging the clutch members 31 for this gear are not illustrated. I secure to this gear a drum or windlass 32. Revolubly mounted on the axle section 4 is a gear 33, having a hub-like clutch member 34 thereon, and a clutch member 35 arranged within the member 34, see Fig. II. The gear 33 is adapted to be shifted longitudinally to throw the clutches into engagement.
Splined to the axle sections 3 and 4 are clutch members 3G and 37 adapted to coact with the clutch members 34 and 35, respectively, of the gear 33. These clutch members arey held yieldingly in position by springs 33 carried by the collars 39 and 40, so that the clutches are permitted a ratchet action. The collar 40 is adapted to receive one end of both axle sections, and also serves as a bearing and support for the axle sections and clutch member 34.
By this arrangement of parts, when the engine is driven through the gears 30 and 33, the axle sect-ions are driven as a continuous axle. At the same time, in turning, a variable speed is permitted through the rigid connection described. rIhe drum 32, through this connection, may be driven independently or simultaneously with the axle. rThe advantage of this construction is that should the wheels strike soft or slippery ground, the rope 41 may be attached to some fixed object and the engine thus assisted, or the windlass may be used for various purposes when ruiming free from the axle, as,
when the engine is used in hauling hay, the l.vindlass may be used for hoisting it, or for lifting bags of grain onto a wagon or the like.
To assist in controlling the engine, I provide the traction wheels, with independent brakes. These consist of the brake wheels 42, having brake bands 43 thereon. These bands are controlled by the levers 44, which are pivoted to the frame at 45, and provided with laterally-projecting arms or levers 46 arranged so that both may be engaged at the same time, or either of them engaged.
By this arrangement of parts, I secure a transmission that is strong, simple and durable, and provide different speeds, and drive the wheels independently of each other in the same or in opposite directions, or one wheel may be driven and the other permitted to remain neutral so that shortI turns may be readily effected, or, in case one wheel should strike very soft ground, the other being on better ground, the power may be delivered to the wheel on rm ground. Also, the drum may be driven either in connection with, or independently of the axles, as desired.
I have illustrated and described my improved driving gear mechanism in detail in a practical embodiment thereof. I have not, however, attempted to illust-rate or describe the various modifications in strueture possible, as I believe these will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which this invention relates.
