[Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXIX] Variable-speed gearing comprises a fluid coupling having a primary-wheel P connected to the driving-shaft I, a secondary-wheel S formed with a toothed annulus 6 of a threeelement epicyclic train, and a vane-wheel W interposed between the wheels P, S and connected to the sun-wheel 7 of the train, whilst the planet-carrier 9 thereof is secured to the driven-shaft O. The vanes 2 of the intermediate wheel W are adjustably pivoted by means of eccentric pins 10 and are normally pressed by a spring-loaded ring 12 into an axial position, out of which they are urged by the fluid-pressure during starting, into an inclined position in which the reaction of the fluid-pressure on the vanes is increased. The leading-edges of the vanes 2 are backwardly inclined. Backward rotation of the secondary wheel S is prevented by a ratchet detent F, the relatively fixed part 14 of which may be releasable at will to provide for a smoother take-up of the drive. For this purpose the said fixed part may be held by a band or other brake, which, in the case of a vehicle transmission, may be interconnected with the service brakes so as to be released when the brakes are applied. Ordinary reversing-gearing may be added.
