Abstract

434,707. Hydraulic transmission of power. VOITH, W., VOITH, H., and VOITH, H., (trading as VOITH, J. M., [Firm of]), Heidenheim-on-Brenz, W³rtemberg, Germany. May 8, 1935, No. 13608. Convention date, May 8, 1934. [Class 69 (ii)] In order to obtain increased starting torque, the guide wheel of a hydraulic torque converter rotates oppositely to the primary and secondary parts and through gearing imparts torque to the secondary shaft. Automatic or other means may be provided to keep the guide wheel stationary during higher speeds of the secondary shaft. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the guidewheel E is connected to the secondary shaft C by gearing F<1>-F<5>, and may be held stationary when desired by a brake H acting on the shaft of the pinion F<12>, the application of the brake disengaging a coupling connecting the pinion F<3> to its shaft. In another form, the wheel E carries a toothed ring L<1>, Fig. 7, and the turbine D a toothed ring L<2>, and brakes M<1>, M<2> are adapted to hold the wheel E and planet carrier L' respectively. The control means for the guide wheel may be actuated automatically in dependence on the secondary speed, and multistage turbine and guide wheels may be employed.
