478,088. Variable - speed gearing. AUTO UNION AKT.-GES. Nov. 26, 1936, No. 32424. Convention date, Nov. 26, 1935. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIX] To facilitate changing speed in an auxiliary two-speed countershaft gear, Fig. 2, driven by a F÷ttinger hydraulic torque-converter, Fig. 1, the normally stationary guide-ring 6 of the latter is temporarily permitted to rotate freely by releasing a brake-band 8. The output torque of the converter is thus reduced considerably during the change. The brake 8, which thus acts somewhat like the main-clutch of a motor-vehicle, and the change-speed gear, Fig. 2, may be operated sequentially by a common control member. The two-speed gear comprises a sliding countershaft 14 and a direct-drive claw-clutch 10.
