Abstract
746,297. Band brakes. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Feb. 3, 1954 [Feb. 6, 1953], No. 3227/54. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XXIV] A band brake 31, Fig. 2, providing reaction for reduced drive in a two-speed and reverse planet gear (see Group XXIV) is engaged by supplying pumped liquid pressure in a chamber 64 to act on a piston 61. When, for upshift, the brake is to be disengaged and a direct-drive clutch engaged, the same fluid pressure which is supplied to engage that clutch is also supplied to a brake-disengaging chamber 65 where, acting on a larger piston 60 and assisted by a spring 63, it overcomes the equal engaging fluid pressure which acts continuously in the engaging chamber 64. A reverse brake-band 36, Fig. 3, which handles greater torque, is applied by a piston 73, acting through a toggle comprising a spring-released lever 76 pivoted to one end of the band and directly rocked by the piston 73 to rock a strut 81 acting on the other end of the band and loosely carried on a pin 84.
