Abstract
914,149. Friction clutches; change-speed gear. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. June 26, 1961 [June 29, 1960], No. 22717/60. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXIV] A multi-disc friction clutch or brake has its discs separated on disengagement by an annular spring 44 reacting at its inner periphery against an abutment 43 formed on an extension 33 of an end clutch or brake disc and acting, through a thrust sleeve 45 on the disc 31 at the other end of the stack. The discs are engaged by an annular piston 38 actuated by fluid-pressure. As described, one set of discs is splined to a housing 11 and the other set to a race 12 of a one-way clutch 13 which acts, when the multi. disc brake is applied, to prevent reverse rotation of an output bevel-wheel 21 of a bevel differential variable-speed gear, and providing a highratio forward gear. The gear comprises an input planet 18 and driven wheels 19, 21 which are coupled to an output shaft for forward and reverse, respectively. A bevel planet-carrier 17 is held against reverse rotation by a freewheel 22 to provide low ratio forward drive when the wheel 21 is free, and the carrier 17 is stationed by a band brake 23 during reverse drive.
