Abstract
836,569. Variable-speed gears. BORGWARNER CORPORATION. May 7, 1957 [May 8, 1956], No. 14516/57. Class 80 (2). A variable-speed gear for a vehicle, providing a low speed forward and reverse, a split-torque direct drive, and hydrodynamic braking by simultaneous use of direct drive and reverse, comprises planets carried by a final output shaft 11 and directly meshing a ring gear 29 fast with a torque converter turbine 21, and a sun 34 on an intermediate shaft 12, which also carries the driven disc of a clutch 15 which, together with the converter impeller 19 is fast on an input shaft 10, whereby with the clutch 15 engaged, the ring gear 29 and sun 34 are both driven at substantially equal speeds the former through the converter the latter through the mechanical clutch for split torque direct drive. For low speed forward drive, a brake 17 is applied to an equal sun 35 which thus also holds the sun 34 so that the train, in reduction, is driven wholly in series through the converter. Reaction of the converter reactor 24 passes through a oneway device 27 to the now-stationary intermediate shaft 12. For reverse, a brake 16 holds the connected ring gear 36 and turbine 21, and the reactor 24, rotating reversely, drives the sun 34 through the one-way device 27, the train still reducing and still in series with the converter. Input and output driven pumps 47, 48 supply pressure for operating the brakes and clutch.
