[Class 79 (v).] In a variable-speed epicyclic train, speed changes are effected by variably braking a drum d, carrying planet gears c, c<1> meshing with driving and driven sun wheels g<2>, h, the wheel g<2> being connected to the driving shaft b through the layshaft train a, f<1>, f<2>, g<1> and a clutch l, and, by disengaging the clutch l and applying a brake or detent to the double wheel g<1>, g<2> or to the wheel a, retardation of the drum d may be used to brake the vehicle instead of employing engine braking. A modified train is described. Operation of the clutches and locking means may be effected by a single lever with means for preventing inconsistent engagements.
