Abstract

434,589. Variable - speed gearing. GRYLLS, S. H., 69, Brook. Street, Grosvenor Square, London, and HARDY, W. G., Wittering House, Duffield Road, Derby. Feb. 5, 1934, No. 3698. [Class 80 (ii)] Change-speed gearing for an automobile in which the gears or some of them are of the synchromesh type, is characterized in that the synchromesh mechanism comprising dog and friction clutches for the highest gear but two is mounted on the lay-shaft, and the gear wheels for the said gear are the rearmost in the gear-box. The invention is described as applied to a gear giving a direct drive, three forward indirect drives and a reverse. The driven shaft a<2> is spigoted into the end of the driving shaft a on which is a pinion e gearing with a pinion e<1> on the lay-shaft d. Integral with this shaft also are a reversing pinion g<3> and a third speed pinion g<4> the latter permanently in mesh with pinion f<3> freely mounted on the driven shaft. The direct-drive friction clutch is shown at f and the clutch for third speed at f<1>, these being engaged and disengaged through a grooved sleeve f<2>. The first speed wheel is shown at f<5> and this may be engaged by a pinion g carried by a sleeve at the other end of which is a dog clutch h<4> for the second speed pinions h<1>, h. The pinion h<1> carries the outer member h<2> of a dog clutch and the outer member h<3> of a friction cone clutch. The inner member of the dog clutch is mounted on splines h<5> on the lay-shaft and is rigid with the first gear pinion g. Pins i on the clutch member h<4> carry a grooved ring in which fits a shoe j<1>. Cams on pins i pass through slots in a sleeve j<2>, freely mounted on the dog clutch member, and operate in known manner to synchronize the clutch members. The sleeve carrying the pinion g and clutch h<4> is actuated through a lever k, fulcrumed at k<1>, by a shaft k<4>. For reversing, a pinion g<1> engages wheel f<5> and a pinion g<2> engages pinion g<3>. The Specification sets out the advantages obtained by placing the gears in the positions described. Specifications 342,824 and 406,316 are referred to.
