Variable-speed gearing.-In apparatus for varying the speed between two shafts and, in one position, producing a reverse motion, a divided shaft b, b<x>, having the two adjacent ends fitting by a pin and socket, is arranged with a clutch block a fitted to slide on and rotate with the inner end of the driving-shaft b. A small loose spur-wheel c, with clutch teeth c<x>, is mounted on the shaft b close to the clutch a. A larger spur-wheel b<2>, having clutch teeth b<3>, is loosely mounted on the inner end of shaft b<x>, this end having clutch teeth b<1> capable of engaging with the teeth of the clutch a for direct driving. The shaft b<x> also carries a clutch d arranged to engage either with the wheel b<2> or with the loose internally-toothed wheel e. A countershaft f is provided with three wheels k, j, g, always in gear with the loose wheels c, b<2>, e. The clutches a, d are operated by levers carrying bowls and engaging in grooves in a cam-disc p, the position of which is varied by the lever t. To obtain a reduced or reverse speed, the clutch a is put into contact with wheel c and the clutch d is connected to either b<2> or e. A larger number of changes may be employed, the clutches being varied accordingly.
