Abstract

5422. Tourtel, J. M. March 6. Variable-speed and reversing gearing; clutches.- Relates to change gearing, suitable for motor-cars, of the type in which driving and driven gears, constantly in mesh, are both loose on their shafts and are connected to their shafts in pairs by internal clutch means. The means employed are the sets of balls and the plunger described in Specification No. 20,127A, A.D. 1906. Loose gears a, b, c on a hollow shaft d mesh constantly with gears a<1>, b<1>, c<1>, respectively, loose on a] shaft d<1>, and the members of each meshing pair are clutched to their shaft by balls &c. f, which are thrust through the shaft walls into recesses g in the wheel bosses for this purpose. This is effected by plungers h, h<1> having pistons i small enough to move sideways to equalize pressure on the balls. The plungers h, h<1> may be connected by a bar j, Fig. 3, operated by a lever k. The bar j is connected to the plunger h' at one end by a collar n and pin o, and to the plunger h at the other end resiliently through springs l.
