4993. Mulhall, M. J. March 31. Reversing-gearing.-In a reversing-gear for motorvehicles, motor-boats, &c., the driving-shaft 10 drives two shafts 27, 30 in opposite directions through toothed gearing 24, 25, 26, 29. These shafts are provided with clutch members, shown as cut-away portions of the shafts, adapted to engage clutch members on shafts 32, 33, on which are secured pinions 37, 38 gearing with a wide wheel 36 on the driven shaft 13. Either of the shafts 32, 33 is brought into engagement with the corresponding shafts 27, 30, according to the desired directions of rotation of the shaft 13. This may be accomplished by sliding the shafts 32, 33 by means of a pivoted lever 39. The shafts 27, 30 may be movable instead of the shafts 32, 33. The various shafts are supported in a stout casting 16 having apertures 17, 18 near its ends to accommodate the toothed gearing.
