Abstract

17,547. Hughes, J. H. Dec. 15. Variable-speed and reversing gearing.-In variable-speed, reducing, or reversing gearing having more than one epicyclic train of friction rollers, the planet rollers of one train are carried by the sun-wheel of the next train, and one of the roller tracks of each train consists of a pair of conical rings pressed towards one another by springs. Fig. 9 shows a variablespeed and reversing eearing for a motor-vehicle. Planet rollers 67 of spherical or double-conical form engage doubleconical tracks, one of which is in two parts pressed together by springs 73 on studs 72. If the sunwheel is so divided, the studs 72 may also carry the planet rollers of the adjacent train. A spring- pressed clutch sleeve 59 connects the driving-shaft 56 to the first sun-wheel 66, and a sliding clutch 94 connects the driven shaft 91 to either of two other sun-wheels 75, 90 or to a planet-carrier 82. The sun-wheel 90 gives a reverse drive, the planet rollers 85 being carried by the casing 54. For the direct drive, the clutch 94 engages the clutch sleeve 59 and pushes it to the left out of engagement with the sun-wheel 66. In a modification for reducing the speed at constant ratio, the clutches and the reversing-train 85, 90 are omitted, and the two shafts are connected respectively to the sun-wheel 66 and carrier 82.
