5076. Schoening, H. March 4, 1910, [Convention date]. Variable-speed toothed gearing.-In variablespeed gearing of the class wherein a pinion h slidable with a wheel e on a driving-shaft b can be alternatively meshed, by means of a control lever d, with any of a series of wheels k, l, m, n, o, p upon a driven shaft q, the wheel e is loose on the shaft b, and is adapted to be connected thereto by means of a friction clutch f, which carries a key engaging a groove c in the shaft. In changing speed, the pinion h, wheel e, and disconnected clutch f are operated together by the lever d until the pinion h is meshed with its wheel k &c. The clutch f is then engaged with the wheel e by a relative sliding movement effected by a lever v, Fig. 2, which is connected by a pivot y to the lever d. In order that the clutch f may be operated before and after the pinion h, lugs a<1>, a<2>, a<3>, a<4>, Fig. 2, are provided under notches z, z<1>, z<2>, z<2>, Fig. 1, in the side of a fixed casing a, into which notches the lever d is alternatively moved. A hook-shaped lug b<1> depending from the lever v is adapted normally to engage one of the lugs a<1> &c. to lock both levers, so that the lever v must be moved before and after the lever d.
