576,849. Variable-speed gearing. CROWTHER, D. Feb. 21, 1944, No. 3156. [Class 80 (ii)] In variable-speed gearing in which pairs of expandible belt pulleys are arranged in series, the driven pulley of one pair and the driving pulley of the next pair are interconnected for simultaneous operation. As shown, a driving pulley 13 drives a driven shaft 20 through pairs of pulleys 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8, and belts a, b, c, d. Pulleys 2 and 3, 4 and 5, 6 and 7 are interconnected for rotation on stationary hollow shafts 10 or 11. Each set of pulleys, for example 2 and 3, have their inner flanges located by a ring 21 fixed on the shaft and their outer flanges connected by a bolt 17 passing through the two inner flanges so that both flanges move together to expand pulley 2 and contract pulley 3 or vice versa. This actuation is effected by pins 24, which project through slots 25 in the hollow shafts and are connected to rods 23 slidable in the hollow shafts, engaging in circular grooves 26 in the pulley flanges. The movement of rods 23 may be effected through the rotation of nuts 27 engaging threaded ends of the rods. Both rods 23 may be operated together by a connecting link and a single screw adjustment.
