[Class 80 (ii).] A drum B, Fig. 1, secured to the driving shaft A of a variable-speed gear carries worms C, engaging a worm wheel D<1> on the driven shaft D, the worms being connected through gears E, F, G, H to an expansible pulley I loose on the shaft D and connected by a belt I<1> to a similar pulley J rigid with a pinion K engaging a toothed part L of the drum, the pulleys I, J being adapted to be simultaneously expanded and contracted, so as to vary the speed of the driven shaft, by means of sleeves Q, Q<1> movable, through the intermediary of a member M<1>, by a screw M. Each pulley comprises side plates with cross members P, Fig. 3, which form the tread and which are slidable in radial grooves P<1> under the action of wedge members R formed on the sleeves Q, Q<1>.
