Abstract
159,790. Allan, H. B. June 8, 1920. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Variable - speed belt gearing is combined with frictional reversing-gearing. The expanding pulleys employed are of the kind in which the belt 27 is supported on parallel bars 26 movable radially by the relative angular displacement of pairs of discs 4, 5 with crossed slots 24, 25 engaged by the ends of the bars. One pulley is mounted to turn with a shaft 1 carried in bearings fixed in a casing 21. The other pulley turns with a shaft 2, which is supported in a frame 29 slidable towards and from the shaft 1. The pulleys carry friction drums 40, 40' which can thus be brought into contact to slow down and finally reverse the driven shaft. The discs &c. are connected by bosses 6, and the discs 5 by bosses 8, and these bosses are internally and externally screw-threaded to engage with axially-movable threaded annuli 11. The pulleys are operated in unison by a lever 15 which thrusts the annuli 11 in opposite directions. The lever 15 is worked through worm gearing 18 from a hand-operated shaft 19, which operates the frame 29 also, through a screw 33, a pinion 35, rack 36, and link 37. The belt 27 has tapered ridges 28 extending longitudinally and engaging tapered recesses in the bars 26.
