Abstract

711,393. Variable-speed friction gear. PUVOGEL, W. Dec. 18, 1952 [Jan. 18, 1952], No. 1516/52. Class 80(2) A variable-speed friction gear, automatically torque-responsive as to both ratio and traction pressure, by the axial thrust produced by worm or helically toothed wheels 16, 20, the latter on the output shaft 21, comprises an internallyconed driven disc 17, fast on the axially-movable pinion shaft 16, and engaged by a convex conical roller 15 fast on an input shaft, e.g. of a driving motor 14 which, under its own or additional mass or springs, pivots on fixed pins 13 in opposition to the downward torque-thrust on the driven disc 17 due to the inclined gear teeth and due to its own mass, with, if desired, adjustable springs, to cause the drive contact point to roll radially on the disc and axially on the roller to vary the ratio, the input shaft acting as a lever of variable length during this pivotal movement. Maximum speed is limited by contact of a buffer-spring 27 on the motor with a hand-set cam 25. Roller bearings 19 directly carry the pinion shaft 16, and like the pinion, are stepped in diameter so that the shaft 16 can be lifted directly from its mounting.
