Abstract

Variable-speed gearing.-Planetary reducing- gearing comprising at least one friction gear pair is adapted to yield variation in velocity ratio by the axial movement of the planet gears. As applied to a wireless tuning set, the planet-carrier J is attached to a knob H which is depressed or raised to vary the speed at which a spindle G can be turned from the knob. One sun gear A is fixed. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the gear A is toothed and the teeth of its mating planet pinion M slide while in mesh as the knob H is depressed. The other planet pinion N is conical and gears with a wheel B fast on the spindle G, which wheel B has an elastic rim Q which accommodates itself to the different positions of the cone N. The pair N, B, of Fig. 2 may be replaced by a pair of flexible friction gears shown in Fig. 3. In a form shown in Fig. 1, the pair M, A is frictional and comprises a disc engaging between two equal flanged discs C, D. The driven wheel B comprises opposed flanged discs E, F which are not equal. As the carrier J is moved axially, planet disc N bears against the discs E, F in a changing manner so that the speed of the wheel B changes. An indication is afforded by a pointer Z, Figs. 2 and 2A, on the knob H. As the knob slides, a lever U engaging a fixed shaft T pivots so as to turn a screw X attached to the pointer Z.
