Abstract

921,613. Variable - speed friction gear. SELECTRA Ltd., and E. W. KREBS. Nov. 7, 1960 [Nov. 5, 1959], No. 37631/59. Class 80 (2). Continuously variable friction gearing comprises driving and driven members 15, 16 frictionally engaging double conical idlers 20 with the semi-angle of each cone being 45 degrees and the axis of each idler being at 45 degrees to the gearing axis 19. Each idler is rotatably and slidably mounted on a spindle 23, the spindles being fast with a common ring 25 slidable along an extension 26 of the driving shaft 10, and one of the spindles carries a rack 28 engaging a pinion by means of which the idlers can be simultaneously adjusted to vary the gear ratio. The driving disc 15 is fast on the driving shaft, the driven disc 16 is journalled on the driven shaft 11 and is urged towards the idlers by spring washers 32 reacting against a bearing 13 in a fixed housing 14. The engaging pressure of the members 15, 16 with the idlers is made torque responsive by balls 33 engaging dimples in the member 16 and a ring 37 which is splined to the driven shaft. In a modification, Fig. 2, each idler has one conical surface 45 formed by the apical portion of a cone and the other surface 47 formed by a truncated cone, this arrangement providing greater reduction ratios. The inner ends of the idler spindles 23 are tied by a freely mounted disc 46, and the spring washers 32 are dispensed with.
