Abstract

199,566. Hamilton, R. M. May 16,1922. Variable-speed gearing. - A worm-wheel 8 driven alternatively from a number of worms 7 of different pitch is made up of toothed laminae 12, which yield relatively to one another to adapt the effective pitch of the wheel to that of the worm in action. The laminae or discs 12, Fig. 2, are pressed between end discs 13 by a spring 14, which is adapted to be compressed, to ease the laminae, by thrust pins 17 operated through a disc 18 and roller 20 from a lever 24. The worms 7 may be separate as shown in Fig. 1, and integral with a barrel 2, which is slid axially over a driving-shaft 1 to change speed, the discs 12 being then rendered loose. Alternatively, the worms may be close together, their teeth having the developed form shown in Fig. 5, the opposed inclination being for reversed driving.
