Variable - speed worm and wheel gearing comprises an arrangement with driving and driven shafts 3, 4, Figs. 1 and 2, in line operable by sliding doubleended clutches 102, 112. There are two or more worms 8, 9 upon the driving-shaft 3 meshing with worms 80, 90, Figs. 2 and 4, upon transverse shafts 81, 91 which have a worm at each end making four worms 82, 83, 92, 93 for the two transverse shafts. These four worms drive constantly four worm wheels 100, 101, 110, 111, Fig. 1, upon shafts 10, 11 which are parallel to the shafts 3, 4 and connected to the latter by toothed gearing 115, 40, 105. The clutches 102, 112 are splined on the shafts 10, 11 between the two pairs of worm wheels, and four speeds of which one may be reversed are effected by moving these clutches to and fro by forks 13 &c. carried by selectorbars 121, 131, Fig. 5, operated by a finger 14 depending from a rod 15 controlled by a twohandled lever 16 moving in an H-gate 17. A bearing block 151 slides with the rod 15 during selection and carries with it depending lugs 156, 157 which lock the bar 121 or 131 not selected.
