178,414. Baird, J. April 11, 1921, [Convention date]. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Variable-speed and reversing gearing comprises parallel driving and driven shafts 3, 4 carrying toothed, chain, or friction gear pairs which are rendered operative selectively by coupled pinclutch members 5, 6 sliding on both shafts. Of the gears 3<a>, 15, 17 upon the shaft 3, the one on the right, 3<a>, is secured to the shaft, the others being loose. The left-hand gear 4a is secured to the shaft 4 and the others 16, 14, are loose. These fixed gears serve to carry clutch pins 5<a>, 6<a> round with the shafts, these pins passing through holes in the gears and being secured to the discs 5, 6. The discs 5, 6 are coupled by levers and a link 9<a> so as to be moved together by a handlever 10. The ends of the pins 5a, 6<a> are set so as to bring in gear pairs in sequence with neutral intermediate positions as the discs 5, 6 move from end to end. The clutch pins may be medially supported by discs 23 secured to the shafts. For reversed driving, the gear 14 when clear of the pins 6a is connected to its shaft by a nested train 18, 19, 20 brought into action by sliding the central gear 20 into mesh. In a modification, a separate idler train is provided for reversing. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also an arrangement in which the clutch pins are replaced by keys sliding in grooves in the shafts. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
