297,317. Loppacher, O. Sept. 17, 1927, [Convention date]. Variable-speed gearing comprises one or more sliding clutch-ended driving pinions such as f. A two-speed gear is shown. The driven shaft a carries fixed wheels b, b<1> normally in mesh respectively with the pinion f which is feathered on driving-shaft c, and with pinion f<1> loose on that shaft. In the position shown, the drive passes through the pair f, b. To change the speed, the pinion f is slid until its dog end g engages dog end g<1> of pinion f<1>. The drive is then through pair f<1>, b<1>. A three speed gear is described in which the other end of pinion f carries dog teeth and faces another pair of loose and fixed gears like f<1>, b<1> . A four-speed gear is described comprising two two-speed gears like that shown in Fig. 1 arranged in parallel. The invention is for driving ventilation fans of coal pits and the like.
