Abstract
723,250. Variable-speed and reversing ratchet gearing. BRADBURY, G. H. July 20, 1953 [April 21, 1952], No. 9918/52. Addition to 700,904. Classes 80 (2) and 80 (3) Automatically variable ratchet gearing as described in the parent Specification is modified for reverse drive in that each friction ratchet pawl 3, which co-acts with the periphery of a disc A rigid with the associated planet pinion B and which is linked at its outer end to the variable throw crank and pivoted at 2 near its inner end to arms 1 pivoting around the axis of pinion B, is reversible in action, being held in either of its tilted positions, limited by a slot 19 in pawl 3 engaged by a pin 20 secured to arms 1, by a toggle spring 6. The outer end of spring 6 is attached to the outer end of pawl 3 while its inner end is attached to a yoke member 1 pivoted at 8 to arms 1 and embracing a cam-11 slidable along the axis of pinion B under the control of a ring 21 engaging a collar 16 on the cam. The cam has troughs 13, 14 separated by a crest 15, and the yoke 7 carries rollers 9, 10, one of which rests in trough 13 or 14 while the other rests on crest 15. In the reverse position, a friction lining 17 on ring 21 may be pressed against collar 16 so as to brake the planet carrier and so lower the gear ratio.
