Abstract

173,637. Robb, C. A. Oct. 19, 1920. Expanding-pulley gearing.-A coupling for transmitting power between eccentrically-mounted revoluble members such as 25, 6, Fig. 1, comprises a steel ball 27 carried by one member engaging a radial groove 26 in the other member. The eccentric 8 may carry an expanding pulley of the cone type which is moved bodily as the effective diameter is varied to keep the belt in tension. A motor-cycle countershaft 1 turns within a sleeve 3 carrying the eccentric 8. Power passes from a sprocket 2 through the disc 25 and ball 27 to one member 6 of the pulley. The other pulley member 9 slides, being actuated by a thrust disc 14b. A support 4 for the whole device through which the sleeve 3 passes has a feather connection 15 with the disc 14b, which thus slides without turning under the action of a screw 13 secured to the sleeve 3. Turning movement of the sleeve 3 to move the pulley bodily and also slide the flange 9 is effected by pressing on a pedal-pin 20. A toothed sector 18 turning on a pivot 19<a> thus rocks and turns a pinion 17 secured to the sleeve 3. A spring detent 23 engages notches 22 in the sector 18.
