Abstract
14,936. Thonger, J. R. June 23. Variable-speed friction gearing suitable for motor-vehicles comprises an expanding friction pulley with movable bevel-faced flanges 1 engaged by a friction ring 17. Either element may drive the other and either is movable towards and from the other to vary the speed. The flanges 1, which slide on feathers 3 on a sleeve 2, are pressed inwards against the ring 17 by springs 7. The sleeve 2 can slide on a shaft 4 so as to accommodate the pulley as a whole to the ring 17. Sprockets 6, 22 transmit power to and from the gearing. The flanges 1 may be separated to stop the drive by rods 9 slidable within the shaft 4 and operable by rods 14. Pins 10 carried by the rods 9 engage the flanges 1.
