Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts.] [Class 80 (ii).] The Specification describes variable-speed ratchet gearing comprising a crank 23, Fig. 1, of automatically variable throw which drives through suitable ratchets 35 a drum 2, which is connected through coupling springs 21 to a disc 5 fast on driven shaft 22. A slider 24 and rods 25, 26 connect the pin 23 to the ratchets. The crank pin 23 is carried in a block A which moves transversely in a frame 32 fast on driving-shaft M. The block A is carried by a screw 16 threaded into the frame 32 so as to move bodily inwards and outwards. The throw of the crank is varied by bring- ing non-rotary elements 14, 18 alternatively into engagement with a pinion 15 fast on screw 16. The elements 14, 18 are preferably friction segments engaged in dovetail grooves in the ends of a drum B moved axially by the governor. The governor comprises weights 6, 7, Fig. 2, slidable radially upon guides 12 on disc 5 against springs 9. The weights 6, 7 carry cam slots 27 so that as the weights move radially, plates 4 move axially and move axially a striking-ring 3 upon drum 2. The drum B is connected directly by arms 10 to the ring 3 so as to be moved axially therefrom.
