Abstract

313,494. Janik, E. June 10, 1929. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 13, 1929]. Variable-speed gearing comprises a crank 3<1> of automatically variable throw which drives through suitable ratchets 12, 13. The crank-pin 3<1> is carried by a block 3, Fig. 1, which moves transversely in a frame 2 fast on the driving- shaft 1. The throw of the crank is varied by bringing non-rotary frictions discs 26, 27 alternatively into engagement with a friction pin 28 fast on a screw 42, which moves bodily inwards and outwards. The discs 26, 27 and pinion 28 are coned as shown. A connecting-rod 4 connects pin 3<1> to a slider 5 which reciprocates in fixed guides 7, Fig. 2. The slider 5 is connected by links 10, 11 to ratchets indicated at 12, 13 which drive in one direction a loose drum 16 connected by springs 23 to a boss 19 fast on driven shaft 22. Upon the boss 19 are governor shoes 24 which move radially and act through links 18 to slide a sleeve 17 upon the drum 16. The sliding of sleeve 17 is communicated by means 25 to the discs 26, 27 which move from side to side to change the direction in or out in which the crank 3<1> is to be moved to maintain the speed of shaft 22 constant.
