Abstract

161,863. Rowe, J. B., and Barratt, A. G. June 2, 1920. Variable-speed gearing.-A worm-wheel 6 is driven by a planetary worm 10, which is controlled by a roller 17 movable over a fixed disc 18. The pitch of the worm is such that it is caused to turn by the worm-wheel. The worm 10 is carried in bearings 7<a>, 8 upon a fly-wheel 2 secured to a driving-shaft 1. The worm-wheel 6 is secured to an aligned driven shaft 3. The spindle 9 of the worm is connected by gearing 15, 14 to a radial splined shaft 11 upon which the roller is moved to vary the speed and direction of rotation. The roller 17 is supported in a carriage 20 which slides on guide-rods 22 under the opposed actions of a cord 24 and springs 22. The worm may be duplicated.
