Abstract

154,644. British Thomson-Houston Co., and Shuttleworth, N. June 5, 1919. Speed-maintaining systems.-In driving-mechanism for paper-making machines wherein separate electric motors drive different sections of the machine, alternating-current commutator motors are used for this purpose and the speeds of all the motors are kept proportional under varying loads by automatically operating brush-shifting gears. The motors 1, 6, &c. drive the sections through gear-boxes 3, 7 and shafts 2, or otherwise, and one motor drives a master shaft 4 through gearing 5. A sleeve 8 associated with each of the other motors is rotated on the shaft 4 through a variable-speed gearing, for example cone pulleys 6a, 8a, and is connected with one member of a differential gear inside the casing 9 thereof, the other member inside the casing being connected to the shaft 4. When any motor is rotating at the correct speed relatively to the shaft 4, the gear casing 9 is stationary, but variation of speed causes the casing to rotate, its motion being transmitted to the worm-gearing 15 of the brush-shifting gear. An electro-magnetic or other clutch 18 enables the brush-shifting gear to be disconnected when the corresponding motor 6 is not in use. According to a modification, the differential gear is arranged on a shaft parallel to and driven from the master shaft 4.
