Abstract
695,983. Rag tearing machines. WALKER & SMITH, BATLEY, Ltd. Feb. 7, 1952 [Feb. 9, 1951], No. 3205/51. Class. 120(i), In rag tearing and like machines having feed rollers of which at least one is positively driven, a feed roller drive means, independent of the swift, is provided comprising an electric motor connected to a feed roller through a speed reduction drive, the drive means being capable of providing for speed changes. As shown, feed roller shaft 16 is driven from a reversible motor 7. via a multi-sheave pulley 7 connected by a V-belt 3 to a plain or multisheave pulley 4, multi-sheave pulleys 9, 11 connected by a belt 10, reduction gearing 12, and a chain 13 driving a sprocket 15 on shaft 16. Pulleys 4, 9 and motor 7 are mounted on arms 5 and 2 respectively, the arms being pivoted at 6 so that the weights of the pulleys and motor automatically tension belts 10 and 3. Rivot 6 and gearing 12 are carried by an arm 18 fixed to the machine frame. The belts and pulleys may be replaced by chains and sprockets, and vice versa. In alternative arrangements, a change-speed gear box providing for reversal of drive and speed reduction, or a variable-speed motor, may be used.
